THE COMMUNITY CHALLENGES DAY PROGRAM of The Cedars of Marin is based at 72 Kensington Road in San Anselmo at the First Presbyterian Church. Under the direction of Program Manager Natasha Annenkova, the program is designed to enable adults with developmental disabilities to develop their functional life skills through volunteer work, social activities, physical fitness, cooking and music classes. Approximately 34 participants choose to sign up for day program activities from a list of volunteer sites and ongoing classes:
Meals of Marin Prep Kitchen — preparing meals for home bound people with life threatening illnesses
St Vincent De Paul Dining Room — serving hundreds of free meals in the community dining room
Marin Headlands (National Park Service) — clearing trails, cleaning beach, maintaining tourist areas
Falkirk Museum — maintaining grounds of historic mansion and decorating for the holidays
Stinson Beach — patrolling state park beach for litter (voted one of the best and cleanest Bay Area tourist destinations)
St. John Episcopal Church — ensuring that programs, prayers, hymn books are ready for weekly services
Petaluma Animal Shelter — socializing cats awaiting adoption
Marin General Hospital — organizing magazines in over 25 waiting rooms; delivering flowers to patients
Power Foods Cooking and Nutrition Class — planning, purchasing, and preparing nutritional snacks; learning about dietary needs, portions, and nutrition
Joy of Music (Appreciation and Performance) — playing a variety of musical instruments, singing with a microphone, and appreciating rhythm and melody
All of the daily activities of the Community Challenges program promote life skills and the development of self-esteem. Providing ongoing community service throughout Marin County benefits our participants by helping them to make significant contributions to society.
This also allows the community to recognize and appreciate our abilities rather than simply viewing our disabilities. Our program participants have been recognized for their outstanding contribution in the community with a certificate of merit and numerous award ceremonies over the years.
A sense of worth, pride in one’s work, and feeling appreciated is what we all seek in our lives. Participants in The Cedars of Marin’s Community Challenges program have the opportunity to experience this sense of satisfaction and reap these rewards every day.
